Antofagasta Bodyboard Festival 2017

The ABF (Antofagasta Bodyboard Festival) was the 3rd stop on the South American leg of the APB World Tour this year. Going into the event it was the first time since I sustained a huge injury to my leg back in 2014 that I had ridden the same wave. However I was feeling confident and the waves really produced for the first few days of competition.

Round 1 I had a really good heat pushing me into Round 3 where I was able to get through in some really trying conditions. The event seemed to be testing us with good glassy conditions in the mornings and then on shore winds and cold weather at midday through to the evening. I was lucky to scrape through a few heats and ultimately make it through my round 4 heat in first pushing me into the Quarter Finals. It was there that I matched up with Brazilian ripper, Dudu Pedra and with the clock winding down he would need a 7 point ride to advance ahead of me. Luckily for me the ocean went flat and we were left sitting in the water exchanging some talk about the heat.

The semi finals would be another tough heat as I drew Roberto Bruno, another Brazilian who has been on a warpath over the Chile leg of the Tour. I went into the heat wanting to get two big scores early and I managed that. I had put Bruno into combination with him needing two scores early in the heat to take the win. In the last few minutes Bruno was able to get a scoring ride but was too late. I was progressing through to a final at the ABF 2017.

As the final drew closer I knew it was going to be tough. Moroccan rider, Brahim Iddouch had been on a tear all event but I knew I could get the scores I needed to take the event out. At the start of the heat I managed to get a decent score but not enough as Iddouch led with my high scores and backed it up with a 7 point ride leaving me needing a high 7 points to take the win. In the end the 30 minute heat wound down and with tough on shore conditions I wasn’t able to get a score to help me get the win.

All in all it was an awesome, well run event. I am super excited to be at the top of the 2017 APB Tour Rankings but I know the hard work doesn’t stop here. Heading into Europe in September it’s going to take a lot of work to stay mentally and physically ready for these events. For now it will be some down time to get my life back in order before I start to lock in some solid travel plans for Europe.

Thanks for all the support over the past 6 weeks and I’m so stoked with the successful run I had through the entire South America leg.
